Death sentence for Didi driver who committed rape and murder

In 2018, in two separate incidents, two women were raped and killed by drivers who picked them up using the carpooling service offered by Didi Chuxing, China’s largest ride-hailing platform. One of those drivers was sentenced to death today.

At the time, reports of the murders triggered countrywide uproar. Soon after, Didi suspended its carpooling business. The company has denied that it will resume this service later this year.

Didi is laying off a quarter of its 13,000 staff members.
