China integrates 5G network into new roads

The largest Chinese telecommunications company, China Mobile, and an expressway operator are building 5G base stations along highways in Hubei Province.

The 5G network will be tested by being applied for toll collection. It will also facilitate trials for autonomous driving.

As of the end of 2018, 31 5G base stations had been built in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei. China Mobile’s Hubei subsidiary plans to spend RMB 1 billion (US$147 million) this year to build another 2,000 base stations in the province.

Likewise, the Taizhou Coastal Expressway in eastern China’s Zhejiang province, which  opened in January, has reserved space for building 5G facilities.

Last year, Baidu founder Robin Li pointed out that the country needs not only smart cars, but smart roads too.
