Beijing sets up 5G stations to aid autonomous driving

Beijing Mobile, a subsidiary of China’s biggest telecom operator, revealed that it has set up dozens of 5G base stations in Beijing to support China’s budding autonomous driving industry.

As autonomous vehicles demand faster and ultra-low latency data transport, 5G is viewed as imperative for the industry’s development and likewise, autonomous driving is also viewed as a key use case for 5G. China is considered a potential market for where the technology could find widespread adoption.

The Beijing network would not be the first such application of 5G ever. Back in April last year for example, Beijing-based tech giant Baidu completed an autonomous driving test based on a 5G network environment spanning around 105 kilometers (65 miles) in Xiongan, a new “smart city” development located close to Beijing.
