Zenius Education appoints former Gojek top executive as its new CEO

Indonesian edtech startup Zenius Education has Rohan Monga as its new CEO, replacing co-founder Sabda PS. Sabda is now the chief education officer, where he will lead and oversee the content strategies and production at Zenius, ensuring that content in the platform is of high quality.

Prior to landing his role at Zenius, Monga was a senior executive at Gojek. He joined the unicorn in 2015 as its chief operating officer before being promoted to head of the international division in January 2018. Monga was a key figure who led Gojek’s regional expansion. Before joining Gojek, he was a senior program manager at Amazon. He also has entrepreneurial experience, having co-founded a fintech platform in 2011.

In an interview with KrASIA last year, Zenius co-founder Sabda PS hinted at the appointment of a new CEO, saying that the person is an expert in the tech sector who will be able to scale up the company’s business significantly.

“Zenius already has strong fundamentals in its education side, but we need someone who can grow this company aggressively. Rohan was a vital figure who played an important role in developing Gojek’s business and he is also very passionate about education. It is very exciting for us as he shares the passion, vision, mission, and values of Zenius,” Sabda told KrASIA today.

Along with Monga’s appointment, Zenius also officially announced that it has raised USD 20 million in Series A funding led by Northstar Group, which is also Gojek’s investor. Other investors that participated in this round of funding were Kinesys Group and BeeNext. Rumors about this fresh investment were already swirling in October 2019, although the firm refused to confirm them then.

Zenius was founded in 2014 by Sabda PS and his partner Medy Suharta. A pioneer in the Indonesian edtech industry, Zenius currently provides 80,000 video lessons on its website, created by more than 50 in-house teachers and many contributors. More than 11 million students have accessed Zenius’ content, and the company has long been profitable with 50 to 100% year-on-year growth, according to Sabda. With this new funding, Zenius wants to further boost its growth, and expand its tech capabilities and services so it can reach more students across Indonesia.
