Xiaomi, China’s #4 largest smartphone manufacturer by shipments, is ready to improve the camera outfitted in its smartphones by establishing a new camera department, announced the Xiaomi founder LEI Jun in an internal email on May 13. The move may come as the company seeks to keep the growth momentum in the saturated Chinese market and to best the country’s top 3 smartphone makers, Huawei, Oppo and Vivo, which are all believed to be ahead of Xiaomi in phone cameras.
The Chinese company was reportedly mulling whether to buy the action camera maker GoPro and has filed earlier this month for an HK IPO, which could be the world’s largest IPO since 2014.
