In a move that opens a world of possibilities for new and creative apps, WeChat has rolled out augmented reality (AR) effects—which overlay virtual imagery onto the physical world—its mini program platform.
The first WeChat mini program with AR features is an Armani cosmetics app, which lets users test the appearance of different makeup, like various shades of lipstick, through their self-facing camera.
Other use cases listed by WeChat for AR include mobile gaming, immersive searching for real estate and hotel rooms, trying on clothes and footwear, and displaying information in a virtual exhibition.
This feature is now open to brand merchants and AR service developers.
