Neighborhood shops are an integral part of India and form a backbone of the country’s daily grocery supply. These shops, known as kiranas, are ubiquitous in the country, with over 15 million of them dominating the domestic retailing landscape with a 90% market share.
The ability of kiranas to connect to a consistent stream of customers presents an enticing opportunity for tech companies, which are helping small shops to digitize while benefitting from tapping into their customer network. A handful of firms like Reliance’s JioMart, Flipkart, Amazon, among others, are vying to get a slice of this market.
