TikTok now has more than 1 billion downloads, a quarter comes from India

Total downloads of Chinese short video app Douyin and its international version TikTok, on the App Store and Google Play, have exceeded 1 billion, according to market research firm SensorTower.

India contributed a total of 250 million downloads so far, making up a quarter of the sum, while the United States has recorded 96 million downloads, accounting for 9.6% of the total.

In 2018, Douyin and TikTok together recorded 663 million downloads. That’s lower than Facebook’s 711 million downloads but higher than Instagram’s 444 million.

In January this year, downloads of Douyin and TikTok hit nearly 75 million, up 161% from the same month the previous year.

Douyin/TikTok has been pitching advertisers in India, the United States and the European continent in recent months to speed up monetization. The international outposts need to help Beijing-based parent company ByteDance meet its 2019 revenue target of RMB100 billion(US$14.8 billion). ByteDance is currently considered the world’s most valuable startup.
