Samsung Pay collaborates with Indonesian mobile wallets Dana and GoPay

South Korean electronics manufacturer Samsung on Thursday announced a new collaboration with two of Indonesia’s largest digital payments providers, Gojek’s GoPay and Dana, which is an Ant Financial-backed payment system.

The collaboration makes the two e-wallet players accessible via Samsung Pay, Samsung’s digital payment services that are available via its compatible phones and devices. Samsung Pay launched in Indonesia in March 2019.

“The growth of digital payments in Indonesia has been very attractive. We customize our global solutions and fit them to the needs of local Indonesian consumers, where QR code is quietly adopted,” said Bernard Ang from the IT and mobile product marketing division at Samsung Electronics Indonesia at a press conference today.

“Samsung Pay combines several e-wallet into one app so consumers can easily transact in their smartphones,” said Denny Galant, the division head.

He cited research by Kadence Indonesia that found 57% of smartphone users in Indonesia has transacted with electronic money, either with app-based or card-based systems. Most were found to be using more than one e-wallet platform.

At the moment Samsung Pay already  integrates with Dana. GoPay will be available early next year. However, Galant added, Samsung Pay is open the chance for collaboration with other digital payment players.

Dana is actually only the third-largest e-wallet player in Indonesia, by number of monthly active users, according a an iPrice report. GoPay is the most dominant, followed by Ovo, an e-wallet service associated with Grab. Recently there have been rumors that Dana and Ovo might consider a merger.
