On the evening of August 16, Chinese gadgets maker Xiaomi’s (HKSE: 1810) founder Lei Jun becomes the latest high-profile Chinese internet figure to be involved in a livestreaming show peddling products from his own company.
The result? More than 74 million people tuned in to his maiden show on Douyin and bought over RMB 200 million (USD 29 million) worth of items.
Last week, the millionaire and angel investor gave a three-hour-long speech at the company’s 10th-anniversary event, pledging RMB 10 billion (USD 1.44 billion) in R&D in 2020 and launched products including a limited version of its flagship Mi 10 Pro smartphone among others.
Earlier this year, Gree’s Chairwomen Dong Mingzhu, China’s “aircon queen”, sold USD 44 million worth of goods in one livestreaming session on Kuaishou. James Liang, co-founder and executive chairman of online travel agency Trip.com (NASDAQ: TCOM), made his debut on Douyin in March, in an effort to boost the company’s business which was severely hampered by the coronavirus outbreak.
