Daily Digest | New name, new game

Facebook, as in the company but not the social network, now uses one of my favorite words as its new name, and I still haven’t figured out what to make of the situation. The new direction is clear: Facebook, or Meta, wants to run—and presumably own—the metaverse and become the power broker in the next phase of human connections in virtual environments. Plus, maybe Oculus’ VR headsets will finally take off.

In general, it’s great to have new ways to experience shared personal and professional connections. However, it’s impossible to ignore the damage that Facebook has made possible on a global scale. The company has embarked on a series of announcements and corporate moves that are meant to pluck Facebook out of controversy and shape its image as a cutting-edge innovator. If you feel like this is a calculated move to divert attention from epiphanies about its misdeeds, you’re not alone.
