Chinese apps dominate Middle East short video and live streaming market

Among the 20 most downloaded short video and live streaming apps in the Middle East in 2018, 15 are from China, according to data compiled by mobile app analytics platform Sensor Tower.

In particular, ByteDance’s Short video app TikTok, along with live streaming platform YY’s clone Bigo Live, were the two most downloaded apps in Apple’s App Store and Google Play, beating Twitter’s Periscope Live.

Sensor Tower looked at download numbers in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Tukey, Qatar, Oman, Egypt, and Israel.

Of the 20 highest grossing apps, which made a total revenue of USD 107 million from their users’ in-app purchases, 15 are from China too. The standout was Bigo Live, whose revenue accounted for 76% of that amount.
