The market size of China’s online copyright industry amounted to RMB 742.3 billion (USD 110.2 billion) in 2018, increasing by 16.6% year-on-year, according to data released on Friday by National Copyright Administration of China.
Online news content, games and videos are still the main pillars in the copyright industry, accounting for 85% of the total market share.
For example, the market size of the online video sector grew 32% year-on-year to RMB 96.3 billion (USD 14.3 billion), due to increasing demand from advertisers and fee-paying subscribers.
China has been enhancing copyright protection. A recent government campaign uncovered a total of 544 copyright infringement cases involving products and services worth RMB 150 million (RMB USD 22.3 million), according to the administration.
In order to protect IP in the booming short video sector, the administration said it is pushing key players in the industry to self-regulate and take action as responsible players.
