CHINA BRIEF | Huawei is testing its own search app in latest move to go without Google services

China’s largest smartphone vendor Huawei has started internal tests for its in-house search app, according to tech blog Huawei Central.

The Huawei Search app offers “features such as instant searches, quick views widgets and newsfeeds” and also allows users to sort searches for videos, news, and images categories beyond providing all-in-one search results.

The new Huawei Search marks the Chinese tech giant’s latest move to be independent from Google since the United States prohibited it from pre-installing the US tech behemoth’s apps and services such as Gmail, Google Play, and others.

Huawei has been upgrading its Huawei Mobile Services since last year, an alternative to Google Mobile Services, in an effort to create a whole new ecosystem of apps for its smartphones, cloud services, and developer community.

Huawei has yet to respond to KrASIA’s request for comments.

This article is part of KrASIA’s “China Brief” section, where KrASIA’s reporters will provide quick daily updates about the tech ecosystem in China.
