As Oracle is downsizing in China, Chinese tech giants are quickly trying to swoop up its clients.
Alibaba Cloud is launching cloud-based database products next week, the firm told KrAsia on Thursday.
These are designed specifically to help Oracle’s customers in sectors such as finance and manufacturing easily transfer their data from the US firm’s traditional hardware-based databases.
The Alibaba Cloud spokesperson said that Alibaba, which used to be the biggest customer for Oracle in Asia, started replacing Oracle databases with its own open-source databases in 2009. By July 2013, most databases in most of its core platforms are now run by Alibaba Cloud.
Alibaba’s newly-released 2019 financial report shows that the tech giant gained revenue of RMB 24. 7 billion (USD 3.7 billion) from its cloud computing business, up by 84% year-on-year.
Alibaba Cloud served more than half of the A-share listed companies in China, the firm says in its annual report, adding that, according to market researcher Gartner, it’s the largest cloud computing service provider in Asia-Pacific.
Alibaba is not the only one eyeing Oracle’s clients. Huawei is also said to launch similar database products this week.
