Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio confirmed on its Sina Weibo channel that one of its ES8 models caught fire during a repair in Xi’an, a city in China’s Shaanxi province.
No casualty was caused by the fire, said Nio, adding that it has begun investigating the incident and will announce results later.
This is the second incident in which an EV caught fire in China–within 24 hours.
Just earlier today, KrAsia reported, a Tesla caught fire seemingly spontaneously while it was parked inside a garage late Sunday. The case is still under investigation.
A similar incident happened in the United States. A Tesla is suspected to have caused a garage fire in Pittsburgh, and later caught fire again near the shop where the vehicle was supposed to be inspected.
“I think it’s important to look into instances of electric vehicles catching on fire seemingly on their own—without a crash. Those instances certainly need to be investigated in order to find the cause of the fire,” commented Fred Lambert, editor-in-chief of Electrek, a news site that tracks the transition from fossil fuels to electric-based transportation.
