In Guangzhou, the capital of southern China’s Guangdong province, facial recognition temperature scanners have been on trial in buses for faster and precise detection, local authorities announced on Tuesday.
According to state-owned media Xinhua, the thermometer, installed at the entrance, scans passenger’s faces targeting the forehead area. The tool is able to measure a passenger’s temperature in less than one second, also reducing the interaction between passengers and drivers.
“The device stores temperature data in real-time for further tracking or information traceability,” said Chen Zhenlin, an official at the local public transportation department.
