Shopee Indonesia collaborated with travel tech platform Traveloka to add a flight ticket booking feature on its app, Daily Social reports.
The partnership enriches Shopee’s suite of digital products which also includes streaming vouchers, mobile internet data, and event tickets.
Traveloka, one of Indonesia’s unicorn tech companies, is an online travel agent with a range of products from train, plane, to hotel tickets. Via Shoppee, users can only purchase flight tickets for now. It also only seems to be available on its mobile app, not the browser version. After filing in personal data, users can choose from various payment options like ShopeePay, bank transfer, and credit card. The destinations offered are currently limited to popular tourist destinations like Bali, Surabaya, Medan, Yogyakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Bangkok.
Shopee also quietly introduced a new train ticket feature, although this is not specifically declared as part of its link-up with Traveloka.
Previously, Traveloka had collaborated with Shopee for the Traveloka Point Catalog program where users can redeem their Traveloka points for shopping on several platforms, including Shopee.
The new travel features were introduced a few weeks ahead of the Muslim Idul Fitri holiday when domestic travel in Indonesia usually surges significantly. Shopee targets to beat last year’s record and have more than 1.5 million transactions during Ramadan this year, and another popular product category might help it get there. According to research by advertising firm Criteo, the fasting month of Ramadan leading up to Idul Fitri changes consumer behavior in Moslem majority countries. It might thus be a good time to introduce new features.
However, there’s no dearth of options for Indonesians to find flght tickets online. Shopee competitors in Indonesia like Tokopedia and Bukalapak already have travel ticket options. And with Traveloka itself and Tiket.com, Indonesia has two popular and established apps who specialize in online travel.
